Founding Principles of AITL

VOCABULARY: The idea is simple: Building up a strong vocabulary in Tamil will give a solid linguistic foundation to the language learner. The entire curriculum is built up on this concept, starting with basic words and building up on it at each level.

LSRW: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing. Language experts agree that these are four foundational skills of any language learning. This will be the order of learning and this will be same format in all modules. As the student progresses through the modules, the complexity will gradually increase.

GRAMMAR: For any language, grammar is an integral part and invariably the least favorite of language learners. To make it “simple” is extremely “difficult”. There will be no specific reference to grammar and grammar will be taught without actually teaching grammar.

PRONOUNCIATION: Kids don’t pronounce Tamil words/letters properly and they know that. This leads to a vicious cycle of no-confidence. Research has shown that practice session with instant feedback is the best way to reinforce pronunciation learning.

SELF LEARNING: The question that is often asked is “why can’t my child learn this language independently on her/his own?” Majority of the modern technology facilitates this and other language learning has caught up, Tamil language learning has not. AITL foundation is being built with this is mind.

CURRICULUM: Curriculum will contain: core materials (modules, books, printed materials); supplementary materials: songs, movie dialogues, word puzzles, board games, and quizlets, etc to aid the core materials; remedial materials: for students that would have trouble following this pattern; and reference materials: additional materials that the student can refer to for further learning.

PROGRESSIVE: Adopt and change with times. Continuously improve. A language and its learning has to continuously adopt with times. With ever changing technology and learning methods, adopt and improve so as to keep the younger generation actively interested in the learning.

COLLABORATIVE: Collaborate with individuals, irrespective of wherever they are in this world, who are passionate about developing the best platform for learning Tamil as a second language.

PLATFORM: Build a platform and infrastructure with established standards that would facilitate the contribution by any individual anywhere in the world that would keep this learning lively and current with times.
